Sorry for the confusion. I just got back upstairs from removing the carpet on my '92 convertible, and that reverse light switch on the shifter is on the driver's side. Narf.
Anyway, for that side cover, I'd recommend going to a junkyard or e-mailing one of the parts gurus on the classified ads (speaking of carpet) and get a different cover. Order a replacement gasket and just drop the new cover on. The only 900s that had something in that space were mid-'85 to '88 900s. Later cars had the upshift light wizardry integrated in the control unit so they'll just have a plug bolt filling that port. You could rig a solution, but this will undoubtedly be more durable.
Or if you want to be even more thorough, use this as an excuse to drop all the covers, clean and inspect, and refill with new transmission lube. I change mine every 80k, although personal experience shows the synchronizers get stiff in very cold weather (due to viscosity breakdown in the fluid) at around 120k. New fluid brings new gaskets with it, and it should take you around half an hour. Don't get the full-gearbox gasket set unless you really intend to remove the inner drivers and the chain cover and the like. I just get individual gaskets for the rear main cover, the dipstick panel cover, and the inspection panel cover, as you call it. Plus the clutch shaft cover on the front at the top. Either way- your call.
