Your headlights were zapping the last of the juice from the battery, so there wasn't enough spark going to the coil and, therefore, the plugs -- could have slowed down the fuel pumps to a standstill as well!
Could you look at the small wire that connects to the alternator that is part of the wiring harness that also has the oil sender wire? The connector that goes to the alternator that plugs in sometimes gets slightly loose and causes the exact problems you mention. I tried to crimp it shut, but ended up grafting in a new connector, and problem solved. You could end up replacing the alternator and still have a problem if that wire to the alternator is not continuous.
