Likely the battery Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Battery or something worse??, SS, Tue, 5 Dec 2006 17:49:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A few assumptions - with a charged battery, if you turn the key to ON but don't start the car, the BAT light comes on. Start the car, and the BAT light goes out. If that doesn't happen, you have a charging system problem. And it wouldn't hurt to throw a voltmeter on the battery when the engine is running - it should be above 13 volts.
Next, clean the battery contacts. Not on the outside, but pull off the clamps and polish up the inisde of the clamps and the outside of the posts - the parts that touch.
That said, it can be the battery. Car batteries aren't designed to be fully discharged. Every time that happens, the battery loses capacity and the ability to hold a charge. This usually leads to more discharges, which leads to a shorter and shorter life. Fully discharge a car battery 3 or 4 times, and it won't hold a charge long, no matter how new it is.
So clean the clamps and check the charging voltage. But even if it turns out to be a bad connection or a broken wire to the alternator, the battery is probably shot.
