There is a little hole in the base of the thermostat -- try to line up that hole with the bleeder nipple. I use a length of hose connected to the bleed nipple, and send the coolant through that line back to the coolant tank. Kind of like recycling it -- once a steady stream is coming into the tank, close it off the nipple, and install the cap. Helps to rev cycle the engine a little too. That method has worked for me every time I have had a completely empty cooling system. Turn the heater control on full as well.
