Yeah, 1/4-20 SAE hex nuts is way to go.

Drive the 3-wing nuts off with a screwdriver angled down in, tap with a hammer, once loose will spin right out. CAN re-tighten same way but it's hard to get them tight enough and you don't want them to loosen.
So replace the 3-wing nuts with 1/4-20 SAE nuts, that's the threading exactly. As Saab Hubby says, try a 1/4" drive socket if your 3/8 won't fit down in the wells. Either 7/16" or 11 mm, which is broached almost exactly the same and works well.
