probably not "stripped" Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: UH OH, JOHNG, Thu, 14 Dec 2006 10:47:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
89 900s,
I assume that you're talking about the engine oil drain plug, right?
If a drainplug is really "stripped" then it may fall out and you'll lose all of your oil. The term stripped implies that the threads are shorn off so there's little or nothing securing the plug. Since, as pointed out in another post, the aluminum casting will generally strip first, getting a new bolt won't necessarily help. The cure for that is to put a heli-coil in the casting. However the real likely thing is that the head of the plug is rounded off and they can't unscrew it, a condition which won't make you lose your oil because the threads are still fine and holding. Lot's of pseudo mechanics use the term "stripped" to refer to a bolt with a rounded off head which is a fairly common problem because people have a tendancy to overtighten the plug which either rounds it off or causes it to round off when someone tries to loosen it. So first, find out whether the threads are really stripped or not. I've never had a rounded off engine oil drain plug that couldn't be unscrewed with some kind of tool. Vice-grips will get a good bite but a small pipe wrench with a long cheater is my favorite tool for this. You should be able to get a new engine oil drain plug from any good parts house. The thread for the engine oil drain plug is 14 X 1.5 mm. Good luck.
