Went to get my 82 900T smog tested yesterday. Crotchety old dude who's been there forever hooked me up to the machine, accelerated once, got out and said he wasn't going to test my car cuz the system detected oil in the exhaust upon engine load. He said he didn't want to have to change filters. Voided the test so I didn't waste my $. He also said another testing place might not care. So that really confused me. I'm not aware of any oil problem with the engine. The spark plugs are clean and normal across the board, there's never any telltale sign of blue smoke at any time, and the exhaust smell is normal. The only leak I know about is a small front seal leak that dampens the exhaust side of the block. When I got home after the aborted test, I took the intake system apart to see what if anything I could find. The inside of the intake tubing and throttle barrel were clean, with a slight film of oil that's normal for a turbo car.

Car is 82, engine is 86 block with refurbished (resurfaced, new valve stem seals, valve lap and polishing) 91 2.1 head, fuel delivery is original CIS with 82 ECU and APC electronics. The engine and turbo have no more than 80K miles on it, pulled from a business delivery car that had 60K miles on it when I pulled it, was well maintained and rarely saw hard driving. It runs really well, and I'm regular with all required maintenance.

So if I eliminate the head, block and intake as the source of oil entering the exhaust, that leaves the turbo unit. Based on his description of his testing system detecting oil when the engine was under load, that suggests a leaky turbo seal, which revealed itself when the oil pressure increased.

My guess is that whatever oil is leaking, it isn't enough to fail a test. I think he looked at the remainder of his day and the line of cars yet to be tested, considered this older turbo car and the chance of some oil messing with his filters (a filter he maybe didn't change earlier that day but should have) and losing customers, then decided to just say no to my car.

Anyone have any similar experiences at the testing place? I'm thinking about at least pulling the oil return pipe on the turbo to see if carbonized oil is maybe clogging the output side of the turbo unit. I saw that on a previous turbo unit. Perhaps it's enough to slow the flow of oil out of the turbo and cause some oil to push out the seals as the o.p. rises with the rpms. Course, I might also need a new turbo. I don't have time for a rebuild (buying the kit, waiting for arrival during Christmas week), but would it help to take the turbo apart to clean out gunk on the inside?

TIA
