I've got two ABS issues with a '91 SPG that seem like they might be related but I'm not certain.
1. Around the same time as I changed outer CV joints, the ABS light comes on after moving faster than about 10 mph. I think I've read to change the ABS rings from the old CV's to the new ones but I ignored that advice thinking that the nice shiney new ABS rings on the new CV's would work fine. Recently, as I was reading about how ABS sensors function, the light bulb went off that the ABS computer thinks the front wheels (roughly twice as many teeth on the new rings as old) are turning twice as fast as the rears.
Is it correct that the outer CV needs to be removed from the axle to replace these rings? And, now that I've thrown out the old rings, should I get them new or from a scarp yard? Dumb, dumb, dumb...
2. A recent brake pedal pumping test revealed a completely shot accumulator - 2-3 hard pumps would cause the ABS pump to turn on and about 4 pumps to trip the brake fluid light. So, got the hot tip on the GM Buick Reatta accumulator replacement for cheap and swapped that out. Now, the pump runs for 15-20 seconds on every startup and kicks in about every 6 pedal applications. Also, the static pedal pump test shows about 6 pumps before the pump activates, nothing close to the 12-15+ that I believe I should be getting.
It also seems like the ABS is kicking in on the rear wheels on hard braking but this likely due to issue #1. I don't notice any ABS effect on the front wheels which could have possibly explained the pump activating too frequently. I think the very long running on startup is the tell-tale sign but of what I'm not sure.
Possibilities that I'm thinking: marginal ABS pump that can't fully pressurized the accumulator, faulty pressure switch. I have access to a complete ABS system front a scrapped car. I could swap out the entire system but I'm trying to be smarter than my previous efforts.
Many thanks for any advice.
