The engine is THE most durable part in any 2.0L OG 900 in my expirience. My sister has an '86 900 S with the twin cam engine, still runs perfectly and I don't think its ever had the timing chain done. She's got about 210,000 miles.
My 1984 Saab 900 8v non-turbo has about 300,000 miles on it, and it was my first car, being a teenager I abused the hell out of it. It still runs flawlessly, does not burn oil, and has never even has the cam cover off. Original head gasket, timing chain, etc.
If you want your motor to last, just change the oil every 3000 miles OR three months religiously and keep an eye on everything else. I have been using Castrol GTX 10W-40 in my '84, it works great and is not expensive. Never experimented with the high-mileage stuff, but my buddy told me it works well in his old Jeep. I don't know if its worth the extra $$$ if you are changing oil frequently.
There is no question in my mind the engine in my '84 is good for at least million miles, it's just a matter of the rest of the car falling apart around it! :)
