There is definatley a way around it. But you have to run a new wire from the source to the interior. When I hooked up the Hella's I used the factory switch. I then added the PIAA round over-the-bumper lights and wired them straight into the high beams with a separate on/off switch.
I think I increased the watts in the ambers and they were great in fog and rain. The PIAA's were for late night travels on rural hwy's. They put out some serious light (think it was 72,000 candle power). Of course not so much a city item. They ended up getting crushed by some bumper.
And yes your right... they will be sacrifice eventually.... I think I damaged them at least once a year on average. But if you have found some that work for you that great.
Not sure how to go around the switch/highbeam scenerio other than running new wire. You might have to do the research...
