Power Mirror Questions

The drivers side power mirror has some "issues" on my '93 900S. When I try to adjust it up and down I hear the solenoid click at the mirror but the motor doesn't run. To move the mirror up/down as I understand both the solenoid and the motor have to be energized at the same time, right? As for sideways movement, the motor ran when the joystick was held to the left but not when it was held to the right. I would have liked to remove the joystick control from the dash to inspect the wiring connection and test the switch with an ohmmeter but removing it seemed like it would entail removing the instrument panel or at least the lower dash shroud. I did remove the fog light switch below the joystick but after removing the nut on the joystick I still wasn't able to push the joystick through the panel for some reason (didn't wan't to push too hard). Are there any tricks to removing this switch?
