..cap and rotor and inspect the plug wires for wear/cracks/excessive oil. I'd change the thermostat, but that's me. Flush the radiator and refill the coolant too. Check that the fans, both of them, will run. if you got warm on the trip home were they on when you stopped? Look closely at all of the belts, make sure you have two on the crank/alternator/waterpump pulleys (if not get a matched set and replace). Look at the color of the power steering fluid, check around the pump area and the rack for any signs of leaks or buildups. If the fluid looks like used engine oil consider sucking out from res with a turkey baster (put a zip tie or hose clamp where the bulb overlaps the tube to keep it from leaking - once it leaks past it's done, it gets to slippery to keep together) and replacing with new fluid. Do this several times over a couple of weeks until the fluid looks newer. Same deal with the brake/clutch resivor.
Check the tires for wear, take them off the car to see the pad/rotor condition *and* look at the CV boots then too. Replacing a cv boot early can save a CV joint and it's cost and labor to replace it. look at shocks to see if any fluids leaked down the body or shaft. after wheels back on bounce the car to see how the shocks react. typical should be a bounce and then dampened to a stop. if it bounces like and old box springs they should be replaced.
Check the rear breaks too. do the shocks the same way.
These are the things I'd do to bring a new to me used car into my stable to feel I knew it's roadworthiness and what items to put on the list of "things to do".
