I understand what you're saying, but it's very difficult to predict in advance what market reception to new technology will be like. Consider the amount of money that Saab put into direct ignition back in the '80s - they were WAY ahead of their time, and their early adoption has lead to a very well developed system that's been in use for nearly 20 years now. Many manufacturers balked at the idea of coil on plug due to cost, etc., but now even Hyundai is using it...
I'm sure the same can be said of Saab's spark-plug based knock sensing, solenoid-based boost control (which eventually revolutionized turbo technology), and 16v heads on production turbo motors.
I'll agree that some new idea are probably better left unthought, but you never know how something will work out unless you try it. GM itself has had its fair share of wacky ideas, but some of them (like airbags) eventually caught on, bettering automobiledom in general.
