Note that those two flexible paper (?) hoses only feed the UPPER half of the side vents; the lower, larger part of the side vents are attached directly to the metal channel that runs the width of the passenger compartment. How do I know this? I just took the control panel and dash out the other night: I'm having a hard time keeping the cabin warm, and was trying to see if I could route the cold air from the center vent back through the heater core, to really get some heat flowing (NOTE on center vent: this blows in outside air EXCLUSIVELY: you're supposed to direct it at your face, in order to keep yourself awake and alert in an otherwise warm passenger compartment [why not just crack a window?]) Because I had to get the car back together to use the next day, I didn't spend a lot of time trying to analyze how the ventilation system works, but because I have no use for the center vent, and it only leaks (or outright blows) cold air into my chilly cabin, not only did I remove the duct that runs from the flap on the metal channel to the center vent (it's a big, clumsy piece of plastic), but I detached (and plugged) the vacuum line for the servo that operates the flap on the metal channel. Unfortunately, this didn't resolve the problem. Since then, it has become even weirder; check this out: the right defrost vent is blowing warm, but the left is blowing cool! I wouldn't have even thought this possible; I plan to look into it soon, and I'll let you know what I find.
