brake fluid lite + low pads?

been having the brake fluid light come on recently. '91 900tc. has had a new abs bomb installed, and been flushed. the rear pads are super thin; been meaning to replace, but haven't had time. i figure this could be the cause of the light. fluid level is fine, brakes feel fine. there is no association between pumping/using the brakes and the light coming on. anything else i should check?
