2nd Saab,
There is a check valve at the fuel pump that keeps fuel from draining back towards the tank when the engine (and fuel pump) is turned off. If the line drains back while parked it can take a long period of cranking the engine to get fuel back into the rail and injectors. A bad check valve may work occasionally so your described symptoms are very typical of a bad check valve. Next time it won't start, crack the banjo bolt fitting at the fuel rail and see if fuel squirts out (no smoking!). If it doesn't then you've (pretty much) verified a bad check valve. I'd put some fuel system de-icer in the tank too, just in case ice crystals have formed in the empty fuel line. Cheers.
