new life to nuckle joints

The steering in my 900 convertible was getting pretty stiff. I suspected bad U-joints in the steering column, and went to some of the sponsors to buy them, and got sticker shock! I was then hoping it was the steering rack that went bad, not the column joints.
Okay, so what do I have to loose! I disassembled the steering column and experimented around after reading some of the posts here. I took the two totally stiff column joints...one which was so stiff I needed to place a pipe in it in order to get it to move... and placed them into a can of 140 weight gear oil. I swished them around in it, and then let them sit overnight. This morning, I took them out, and started flexing them every few minutes or so vigorously. The oil in the can started turning black. Slowly but surely, the joints started freeing up a little bit better each time as they absorbed the oil, and the gear oil started perimating them.
By this evening, the joints were nice, loose, and floppy, but silky smooth, so I cleaned them up and re-installed them in the car. I also lubed up the bearing right behind the wheel. With everything re-installed, I took the car out for a test drive. WOW!!!! Amazing!!! The steering works so good now, it's like a new car! I was glad I was able to save myself almost $400 by doing this. I think I will add this procedure to my yearly P.M. list. The car doesn't get driven much...usually only about 5-6 thousand miles a year, but it's certainly worth it!
