PhilV,
Perhaps most importantly, type F ATF isn't really appropriate for lubricating the ring and pinion gears and I would expect severe wear patterns on the gear teeth to develop and cause gear failure. You'd think that failure of the opposed seals in the pinion housing would be a problem but I've rarely seen evidence of those two seals failing, they are really pretty well protected. Wrecked pinion bearings would hurt the seals but T37s don't eat pinion bearings like the 5 speeds do. The differential case has two axle seals, a large cover gasket, a drain plug and numerous bolt holes which require sealant and loss of gear oil is almost always related to a problem with one or more of those. Despite the inconvenience I'd lean toward sticking with periodic inspection for leaks and fluid level checks.
