Check the battery cables by using a set of jumper cables. Go directly from the battery (-) to the engine block...see what happens when you try to start the motor. If that's ok, then do the same to the (+) side of the battery jumped directly to the (+) terminal on the starter. If these troubleshooting steps d not change anything, then you know the cables are ok. A good limp home technique is to keep the voltage drain to a minimum and run on battery as far as you can go. Buy another $40 battery and negotiate a recharge for your existing battery and go as far as both of those will get you. When you can't go any more, see if you can find a gas station, or person, that can charge both the batteries and be on your way again. Tedious, but this is what people with electric cars and battery powered wheelchairs deal with all the time.
