Your mechanic is correct - your car has an internal integrated solenoid. However that solenoid could require more and more current to kick in as it ages. If this happens your staring circuit won't be able to provide enough current anymore. One way to provide more current is to add another solenoid and use existing starting circuit to engage it. First you need to identify location and type of solenoid which would fit. Then - run wires and make sure they are at least 10 gauge. The whole job took me less than 1 hour. It was way cheaper and easier than replacing starter. The car starts perfectly since the job was done.
