Yes, I've checked, rechecked, and deca-checked the cam timing. I'm confident that is not the issue here.
This was an issue prior to my buying the car, but at the time I thought it was just not starting well because coolant was in the cylinders. It started hard and idled high when it did start (same symptoms now after the repair).
When it did start, the idle would drop back down after it warmed up.
I've replaced the distributor (broken hall sensor on old one), plugs (NGK), wires, cap and rotor, and all the vacuum lines. I cleaned the AIC valve and throttle plate. The O2 sensor looks very new. I don't have a different AMM to test out.
