I have interchanged the old-style pumps between years without any difficulties. A few years back I did look into the possibility of using a VW pump (i used to own a VW rabbit so i had a bunch of extra parts lying around). The advantage wasn't that a new pump for a VW would be much cheaper, it was that i had access to a large number of inexpensive used VW pumps at the wreckers.
From what i remember, the VW pump from my 79 (fuel injected) rabbit looked about the same but was maybe a little fatter (in diameter) than the SAAB pump and had different connectors. The connector problem didn't worry me however the physical difference would have made it difficult to insert it into the existing plastic/rubber SAAB pump assembly.
If you are interested in doing you own investigation and are close to a place that wrecks VWs i'd suggest heading out to the yard with a ruler and taking a look. At least on the VW rabbit the fuel pump is readily accessible just forward of the passenger-side rear wheel well. It is covered by a black plastic casing and surrounded by foam.
In terms of technical specifications i would very strongly suspect that VW pump would do the job. From what i have seen, the early fuel injection systems were highly standardized between different car makers in the late 70s and 80s. In fact, i believe that the Bosch CIS system was used with very limited modifications between the SAAB 900, VW rabbit/jetta, and Ferrari 308 (just to name a few).
