5 speed replacement Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re:that seems backwards to me..., Zaab ![]() |
white65,
That '85 tranny will certainly go into your '93. The inner drivers may have to be changed if the original size 1985 drivers are still intact (doubtful). The early drivers had 3 raised rings and the newer ones have 2 (counting the ring that's hidden under the boot). Also, the early 5 speeds did not have a shift centering spring. They relied on a spring in the shift lever box to provide centering so ideally you should install a shift lever assembly from an early car or you'll have no shift centering. It's not really practical to retrofit internal centering to an early 5 speed gearbox. Get the rubber joint that goes with that early assembly too. Input ratios and stack ratios vary slightly for different years and turbo vs. NA so you may notice different RPM/MPH characteristics depending on the source of your '85 unit (and how you drive). It's not too hard to swap the input chainwheels (they all interchange). The gear stack variations are quite small and not changable.
Other than those considerations you should be able to bolt right up.
