David, your dilemma sounds like a heater valve that is either disconnected or not closing. You can check the linkage from the dash to the valve by removing and looking/feeling through the left speaker cover. Remove the cover and turn the heater knob to see and follow the linkage to the heater valve. Quite often the linkage has become disconnected and the valve is fine - easy to reconnect. If linkage is connected then it is likely that the valve is not working, more involved but doable. Do a search for methods to R&R heater valve.
