Battery is new you say. But you don't offer enough detail to rule out a charging problem/discharged battery. And, if the charging system has a problem, that could fit your troubles. Runs flat, quits, recovers enough to run car for a while, discharges again, quits again. When they're flat enough they don't have enough zip to turn the starter. Long sitting plus a warm day might have meant it recovered enough to crank and start car once, but not enough to crank it to re-start. If it's not being charged, running your car won't improve the battery.
So, has your alternator warning light been glowing while the car is running? How have headlights looked recently? Etc. With the key on, headlights on, are they bright, or just dull glowing orange filaments?
You don't give much description of the sound you say it makes instead of turning engine over.
If all is well with the battery and it's a bad ignition switch or bad solenoid, you should still for quite a while get perfect behaviors, among failed attempts. Just fewer and further between. So what happens if you keep on trying to start it, starting from key in off position? Like, 10 or 20 or 30 attempts?
