Sedan and convertible taillamps

How well are the taillamps supposed to follow the contour of the body? I was playing with one of mine today and it took a lot of muscle to get the lens to conform to the shape of the rear of the car. In fact, I was replacing one with internal cracks with one that's free of internal cracking and I was thinking that I've caused the cracks by bending the lens too much.
I was thinking that maybe it's not designed to strictly follow the curves of the metal, even though I think it should.
For one, there's a small lip on the inside edge of the lens that looks like it's designed to tightly overlap the black metal portion which holds the license plate, but on my car it's a few mm off.
Also, at the top of the lens the molded plastic doesn't mate so tightly with the metal and the best possible fitment still results in some large gaps.
It's possible that the rear end of my car is slightly out of whack, but it's also possible that the taillamps weren't manufactured for a tight, form fit.
