According to my 1990 owner's manual,
"The system can be indefinitely electronically deactivated by turning the ignition key to the "ON" position for 2-3 seconds and the (sic) off again. The system can be mechanically disconnected while the car is being serviced by unplugging the siren/warbler under the hood. Remember to reconnect the siren for normal use."
I think it was supposed to say "... and then off again."
I don't know how the pushbutton system was added to your car. It may involve finding a different control unit, but judging from the wiring diagrams for similar cars (you don't want to know how many iterations this alarm system went through) it may not be as simple as wiring up or plugging in a different box. For the pushbutton setup, you need a set of ROM chips (for the remotes and the CU) and the buttons themselves. These used to be available; I don't know so much anymore. The chips were made by Alpine so you may be able to find them aftermarket. I know the same key fobs were used in BMWs of the same vintage, especially the E36 3-series.
