2d gear 'sliding door' catch - longish

Rebuilt 91 5spd - can still exchange. Best as I can describe it (relative to several new or good rebuilds), when shifting into 2d, more so cold than hot, but happens with latter too

It sometimes feels as if shaft or 'sliding door tracks(?)' are somewhat displaced and not clear of each other, and can feel a mild-to-moderate block or catch between them, always at the same throw point, until they passingly clear. It feels distinct from a synchro grind, which is also noticeably present in 2d and less so in 3rd. Remaining gears have good friction rub feel to them.

New motor mounts all around; shift coupler appears good; shifting aligned, 5th gear/reverse pin length at spec; ball good; new plastic bushing inside rubber donut.

Other related notes: running a slightly heavier lube (Amsoil MTG | usually mostly highway driving), which will be swapped out, but even if improvement is felt, isn't that just masking an underlying problem?

Also, it feels like the clutch shaft wasn't greased properly (will redo) or possibly a pilot bearing issue. There is sometimes a clunk when shifting from idle to 1st, 2d, or 3rd. Reverse is quite good .

Insight as to what might be happening (or too many confounding factors)? Shift fork? Asking as recent engine/trans swap has to be redone. Am trying to make sense of the trans schematic as to what is sliding into what
