Have you recently determined if the fuel pump is running?
There will always be some residual fuel pressure in the system. I had a bad fuel pump, and the car almost would start a few times. And evenually wouldn't even try and catch. Those early attempts were draining the last few drops from the system. And when the pressure drops low enough, the fuel doesn't spray out the injectors, it dribbles out. Dribbles are big drops, and big drops of fuel don't mix with air, and don't burn when sparked.
The first thing I'd do is re-check that the fuel pump is running. Here's an exerpt from an exceptionally old posting:
Basics for both 900 and 9000, LH fuel injection-
1 - Look for air leaks - hoses off, cracked, broken. Check around the air
mass meter, intercooler and turbo (turbo models, 'natch)
2- Check fuses - on 900, check #30 (fuel pump), 22 (key on), 3 (coil
primary), for 9000, check check #14 (fuel pump), 13 (key on), 9 (underhood,
88-on) (coil primary)
3- Make sure you didn't run out of gas
4- Check for spark - does the tach needle bounce during start? If so, the
primary and ignition amp are working. If not, suspect the ignition amp.
To energize the fuel pump- open the fuse box, and jumper between fuses 27
and 30 (900) or 14 and 22 (9000). You should hear the pump run (this will
happen even with the key OFF). No noise, then check the wiring to the pump,
or the pump itself.
Do you hear pump noise, but the tank is less than half full? I don't remember if you have the two stage pump or not. If it was the two stage - the 'helper' pump worked for the lower half of the
tank. If the 'helper' pump fails, you won't get any gas with a half tank or
less. Add enough gas to get to 3/4 tank, and if the car starts, you need to
rework the aux pump.
If the pump is running, check your fuel filter. If it's clogged, you may not be getting much fuel flow. Again, dribbling fuel won't start the car, but it will wet the plugs.
