Our original '85 900 got backflushed every 2-3 years and got new belts pretty regularly. The water pump was changed around 110k. At 190k, RIP Sonja, the head gasket was fine when I managed to kill the car.
The 1990 900 I had after that never had head gasket issues.
The 1988 900 we got did have head gasket issues after using one of the worst radiators on the planet and a slowly-dying thermoswitch make the temperature run up to around two thirds most of the year. That didn't kill the head gasket. After the belts shredded and trying to drive the car another couple of miles with nothing spinning the water pump, that killed the head gasket, and only enough for it to leak slowly. It was replaced 80k ago; I fixed the overheating 60k ago and we've had no problems since then.
My 1992 900 S has not had head gasket issues, but that's probably because the weak head gasket (original design) has been replaced already prior to failure.
If you want head gasket issues, go get a Caravan. I have yet to find a Saab head gasket that has failed without cause. The ones I've seen, statistically few, are either due to heavy overheating or from never changing the coolant in the motor. Don't overheat the car (which kills the gasket in shear) and change your coolant every other year (so the gasket doesn't get eaten away internally) and you should be fine.
