I fixed a few small spots in the floor of my '88. I would say the rust was caused by a design flaw since mine was a warm weather driver only prior to my purchase. The frame rails tend to collect water and crud since there is a ledge for it to collect. Click the link for some pics.
Hopefully yours is not as bad as the '88 SiS convertible floor I fixed a few years ago(pic below)
