coolant hose to heater core problem

1986 900TC started running hot. I checked and found that the lower of two hoses that run from the engine into the body of the car to the heater core had come off. I undid the upper hose to get a better look and the 2" plastic piece that the bottom hose attaches to has broken off in the hose. My delimma is how to temporarily fix the problem so I can get it to my mechanic 12 miles away without the car overheating before I get there. How difficult would it be for me (somewhat mechanical)to replace the plastic piece with the two 2" hose receptors, at least to get it to the mechanic to make sure its done correctly? Hoses are in good shape, not brittle, cracked, etc. Can I somehow run a U shape hose between the upper and lower hose and just by-pass the heater core to get it to the mechanic? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
