Find the small wire from the harness to the second terminal on the alternator. It's the small flat terminal on the alternator with a wire that has a female clip on it....NOT the big friendly high current carrying wire but about an inch from the big terminal.
This little wire carries the excitation voltage for low rpm current generation. If it is broken or unattached the alternator won't charge until engine rpms hit maybe 2500 rpm or so.
A few months back I got my car back from the indie after having the suspension bushings replaced on both sides uppers. The guy had inadvertantly broken this wire on the driver's side (LHS) and the car died five miles from the shop. Luckily I got a jump and kept the rpms up over 2500 on the way home and fixed the wire next morning as well as the problem.
If the wire isn't broken, check for a good alternator ground. Otherwise, it probably is the voltage regulator brushes (the regulator itself lasts a long time) which should be replaced on GP every 140K or so anyway!.
