The oxygen sensor reading (connected - eng. totally warmed up) didn't fluctuate much until I forced the throttle closed to bring the idle down from around 1100 to about 950 rpm (guessing, as I was under the hood)...then my DMM display started fluctuating normally. I plan on cleaning the TB next with hopes of reducing the idle...actually, I'm unsure as to how one adjusts the idle speed on this car - my 83' 8v & 85' 16v both have a screw you thread in/out of an air bypass passage on top of the TB, but that passage is blocked off on this 87' - what gives?
Doubtlessly there's another problem - but where to look next? I'm suspicious of the AMM not functioning properly, esp. when the eng. is cold. Can I swap in the AMM from my 85' 900t (was going to do it today - but it's been snowing & I'm out in the weather) without fear of ruining it? I'm still going through all the "AMM" & "running rich" BB search results, of which there are many!
I should mention that while the unburnt gas odor got MUCH less overpowering after I adjusted the AMM's base setting from .308 to .380 ohms (per Bentley...though I don't have the manual - called a friend) it's still noticeable. Oh!...one detail I forgot about - the header down pipe is quite mangled (new one coming) & practically disconnected from the cat. due to a bit of rust & a careless poke from a gigantic loader fork when the car was extracted from it's premature junkyard grave. Would pre catalyzed exhaust smell that badly? ~ Thanks for the help.
