Search this bulletin board, read the friendly 900 conversion manual, and ask around. I think I put together a good list of parts and supplies! you may need a little while back.
My '92 has an '89 box in it. The gearing is surprisingly short for the torquey 2.1 but I have to do something between 0 and 30 miles an hour, why not fire through all the gears by then? It translates into almost-automatic engine speeds on the highway, but I'm still able to squeeze around 34 MPG out of the engine, and you end up getting lazy. Set the cruise (I'm assuming mine finally works now) and never worry about shifting until you get off the expressway or hit a serious speed zone.
Read the code off your 5 speed to figure out what final drive gearing it has.
Saab has stopped using the engine-trans gasket. They now recommend sealant instead. You may want to get that right because if everything goes well (it did for a novice like myself) you shouldn't have to take that junction apart for a long, long time.
Theoretically, you could put any gearbox back to a 99 four-speed on the car, the mating surfaces are all the same (someone back me up here?). It's just a question of the number of gears (5 speeds showed up in '81-'82) and the internals ('89 and later had revised, oversized pinion bearings, '91 and later had wimpier shift forks for lighter action). Turbo transmissions (first digit is 5) had a higher final drive.
If it isn't on the list of things to definitely change, make sure you get a new taper pin. It turns out that I got extremely lucky when mine didn't mash up or strip or anything else bad like that.
Best o'luck, start assembling your parts, and save your 900 from an early death like I did. (My 5 speed conversion was over four years ago now.)
