William H.,
The difference from one version C900 5 speed to another is slight ratio differences and, over the span of it's production, attempts at making the gearbox more durable. Most of the "improvements" are dubious at best. A lot of people have high regard for the size increase in the rear pinion bearing (the front pinion bearing was unchanged) that rolled out with the 1989 cars. My observations suggest that the best thing ever done to these units was the installation of the sleeve between the rear cluster gear bearing and the layshaft which was also new in 1989 units. The very late units have some peculiar and troublesome modifications to the shift control components. So I'd say, look for a 1989 unit.
As for ratios, you have to have a list of the versions that you can cross-reference and it's more trouble than it's worth. The main change in ratios was facilitated by using different primary drive sprockets. So just make sure that the primary drive sprockets are the same as the current ones. If needed you can put your old sprockets in the replacement gearbox pretty easily. Good luck.
