Plenty of stupid turbo answers, though...
In 1988, Saab changed to the "wet" center sections = water cooled. These were Garret T3 turbos. Next, they changed to the Mitsubishi TE05-12B in just the SPGs. Shortly after (by 1991??) all the 900 turbos were TE05-12B mitsu units.
The TD04 was used in the 9000 and 9^5 Aeros (and in 9^3 Viggens, too, I believe). And some Volvos, and probably other cars too. Good turbo for the 2.3L engines...
TD04 isn't a bolt on to your 900 - different flanges, port orientations, and cooling/lube lines. If it did bolt up, it would work, but probably take longer to spool up, and I think you'd need more fueling to keep up with the larger air flow.
