5-speed manuals seem strong enough, I have an '84 non turbo with the original trans and probably 300,000 miles on it. Tranny is still strong as ever, and it has been abused I can assure you.
My Dad's '89 Turbo convertible has about 130,000 on the five speed, at some point a previous owner put the red box and an exhaust on the car. You don't do that because you drive slow. His is perfect too, no problems at all.
Peter Gilbert had his manual tranny rebilt at 200k in his SPG, then drove 800,000 miles on the rebuilt trans. Manuals are good is my point.
Automatics (always) need to be properly maintained by service at least every 30,000 miles. I have one in a turbo convertible with a broken odometer, shows 84,500 on the clock. It shifts smoothly and does what it is supposed to. Because it only has three gears it is slow and gets poor fuel economy. I honestly don't care because I love the car so much. I almost reccomend the automatic in a turbo convertible, they are such awesome cruisers. If you have to have a stick though, I totally understand. They are faster, more efficient, longer lasting, etc etc.
If you have to have an automatic, get a turbo or you will pull your hair out with frustration at how slow it is. Get ready to average 20 MPG also. From what I have read, 150,000 miles is reasonable to expect from an automatic. Many are then converted to 5-speeds . Why not?
