Brownsaab,
Hey you're not formerly known as "not here often" are you? I just was in on a thread where a guy had the same basic problem. His mechanic spent $800 on parts but only 3rd gear was specified as being replaced. Inawhay..My experience with these 5 speeds (I used to be the tranny rebuilder for a large independent Saab shop) is that the pinion bearings generally go about 150,000 miles before they are noticeably bad, either very noisy or causing actual problems. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is a pre or post '89 unit. Making (only) the rear pinion bearing a little bigger didn't seem to have a discernible effect on the longevity of the unit. A few people get 200K, a few get 100K, but most come in at 150K. That's the general "rule" the way I see it.
Opening a gearbox that needs a 3rd gear, and not doing at least the most problematic bearings belies a weak background and insufficient familiarity with C900 Saabs. Perhaps this mechanic is more at home with Toyotas or Fords. So just subtract the known mileage from 150K and you'll be pretty close to what's left before P. bearing time. Although, given what we already know about the rebuilder in question I'd be bracing for a much sooner failure due to probable mis-assembly. (Sorry) good luck.
