I've seen it before; it was good for a nice chuckle. As always, I don't agree with everything.
Timing chain every 70k? Uh-oh, maybe I should take another look at the 216k (today) chain on my '88. They also failed the head gasket check, but from the sound of things, mechanics there actually follow the maintenance schedule (pronounced SHED-yool) and most of their cars will see new coolant every few years, as it should be. Also, the steering racks may "go out to lunch" at 100k, but the (slightly leaky otherwise smooth and tight) rack on my (again, 216k today) '88 is perfectly fine. Degrease the thing every six months or so.
"Bomb-proof gearboxes" indeed; Brits know how to drive, and I think I recall hearing that 85% of the 900s to hit the UK were As God Intended, I mean five-speeds.
Also no longer true are the parts prices. In 2000 I could get away from a dealer with a pair of ball joints for $75; now they're asking nearly that much apiece. They have taken the approach that if we want to keep our old cars running instead of buying a new one, they'll gladly take our money. This is leeching at its finest, and a great way to drive people like me away.
