basically you need to remove the cover over the emergency brake adjuster in order to back that ajuster out *before* you can put the new pads in, the adjustment is mechanical and rachets forward, never backward, to keep the pads mechanically close to the rotor, then when you pull the emergency brake handle it only needs to move the amount you are used to and allows full lock on the brake. So, you need to remove the cap and use an allen (like the other post said, checkout the guide, very good) and back the allen out.

I like to use motorcycle tire irons at this point. I put the iron in at a 90 degree to the rotor and against the center, the tire iron has a gentle hooked end and put that against the pad to help get it to move out away from the center of the rotor, be gentle.

After I get the pads out (you did back out the adjustment as above, and leave the emergency brake handle down aka off, right?) I just put the same tire iron in past the piston/cylinder in the caliper and use an inner area of the rotor as a pivot point, then just pull and hold, keep the pressure up but just wait, the piston will start to move and the opening will get wider, put one new pad in and do the same lever and hold on the other side, it will clamp down on the new pad and then open up on the other side, put it in, and finish up. be SURE after you are done, AND BEFORE YOU MOVE THE CAR that you gentley push the brakes as many times as necessary for them to feel like they did before when they were working properly. bad form to roll away and run into something at the first attempt at a stop! As to the emergency brakes, they are *self* adjusting, stay away from the cables or any other adjustment, backup in a clear parking lot, 10-15 mph, and apply the lever on and off several times. it will firm up...
