If the charging light goes out at higher RPMs (best to verify charging voltage w/a meter), you're voltage regulator brushes are probably worn down - get another VR at the bone yard from pretty much any Bosch alternator you can find (Saab/VW/BMW...anything European), just be careful not to install another worn out one! Alternatively (pun intended - ha! ;) you can solder new brushes in - available at an armature repair shop...or they could do it for you, though I think a new VR only costs around $30 - check eEuroparts. Hopefully your rough running cond. is due to weak spark as a result of the battery dropping below whatever the threshold is for the coil to generate enough zap. Oh - something I've heard on this board is that an if an incorrectly rated bulb is installed in 'Alt' warning light location, some cars (Saabs especially) will not charge the battery! Weird eh? You mentioned that some fiddling had occurred regarding the instrument lights, so this could well be your problem. You should also check all the grounds you can access - most notably Alternator to engine & engine to frame. That car sounds pretty cool, good luck! Stay away from Chiltons repair manuals unless you've got a Chevette or a Maverick - Haynes is pretty good. ~ Cheers
