Rust repair - structure questions

My 85 900S Notchback has some fairly bad rust all along under the driver's door. It appears that the steel along the door inside, under the carpet is ok, but the along the seam on the bottom, underneath the car, needs patching almost the entire length of the door.
I assume this whole section, top and bottom, form the structure of the car here?
I plan to get a piece welded in along here - what size (thickness) metal should I have put in?
So far, the front end structure looks ok, but I plan to clean it up also and inspect more closely. There are holes in the front and rear fenders on the driver's side - this side gets more salt in winter because most of the salt is deposited on the center of the roads...
thanks for any advice. I did review Doug M's photos of the floor repairs in the photo gallery. Are there any others?
