If the fluid level is still visible on the dipstick, it should be enough to engage the clutches as seen by that the reverse is still working.
It is probably the end of the brake band material for the forward gears.
It comes a time where the friction material has worn so thin that it just falls off the band and the transmission stops going.
A constant low fluid level will speed up destruction since less fluid means more work for the remaining fluid and it overheats and wear down the friction material.
I have a 91 in the shop right now with similar symptoms. Only barely moves forward when cold but not hot and moves ok backwards. This transmission though has been showing signs for many miles and it finally had enough and gave up.
The problem nowadays is to find a rebuilt one.
Saab has stopped selling the factory rebuilt ones so you need to find other rebuilders which are few and far between or try with a used one which is a huge gamble.
I guess, Eriksson transmission is one of the few still doing them.
