Check the connection on the back of the lighter. While you're in there, check the insulation on the wires in question. '85s had special wiring harnesses whose insulation turned into powder after 15 years or so, so while you're at it, check all the wires under the hood too.
Chaz, the issue in '88 (as far as I know, mine's only at 216k with ZERO electrical problems so far) was that service campaign was launched to add anti-chafing insulation behind the dash. I suppose if it hasn't caught fire or poppin' fresh fuses or acted gremlinish (acts like an AMC Gremlin?) then it either got it or it's fine. I'm pretty sure the insulation that was mentioned is black material that looks like a shrunken door seal and was behind the instruments and glove box on a metal seam on my car. My car was only the 2,290th '88 built so either it was added later or the problem was fixed by the time mine rolled off the line.
