Almost certain that this is your problem. The front motor mount should be visible just behind the radiator. If one or both of the ears break off, the whole engine+transmission can drop onto the aluminum cross braces. In that case, shifting into fifth will be impossible.
Exactly this happened to me. New engine mounts are available from Europarts for abount $25 (they should go to heaven alone for keeping things like this in production from non-OEM sources, and then even selling them at an utterly reasonable price!), and the replacement can be done with both the engine and the radiator still it place. It's a bit tricky, but not too technically demanding. You have to be very careful to cover ups the radiator with heavy ardboard in the immediate work area so you don't whack a hole into it with a wrench or hammer.
