Thought I should correct some incorrect info posted in reply to a question I posed a couple of weeks ago so that no one will do what I did. The original question and thread run from March 31-April 1. In short, I asked if the transmission cases between '89 and '91 were the same knowing that the syncros and shift forks are different. A couple of replies from knowlegeable guys indicated that the '91 internals would work in an '89 box.
It seems that '91 internals and '89 boxes are, in fact, not compatible in a significant way. It, of course, has to do with syncros and forks. Up to and including '89, both shift forks slid (past tense of slide?) on a stationary shaft. In '91 (and '90 I guess) the 1-2 shift fork is fixed to the shaft and the shaft moves. That means that '89 and earlier simply have a "receiver" hole in the case for the shaft whereas '90+ has a bushing to allow both lateral and rotational movement.
Live and learn for me.
