Bruce,
The very first thing to do is modify the reverse actuator arm. There's a lot posted on this site on that topic, even recently. Search under "Reverse gear fix". The typical problem is that the reverse idler doesn't normally engage very deep so once the tips of the teeth are worn off it won't stay engaged. Making it engage deeper solves the problem and there are some real easy ways to do that. A recent post detailed a broken reverse actuator arm, so that can happen too. Also an easy fix. Don't jump to the conclusion that you need new gears. Good luck.
