Loosen your car's dual belts to the point that the alternator and water pump barely turn, don't rev up high, keep the AC off and don't overload the motor, cross your fingers, subscribe to roadside service, and buckle up. I've had two pumps start rattling at the bearings and I got around a thousand miles out of one of them and it didn't let go. This applies for Saab pumps; other pumps are constructed differently.
If it lets go, turn on your heater and fan to full blast and coast the car to a stop. You'll feel what you think is a gunshot or roadkill hit as the belts depart and impact the firewall.
As soon as you pull over, and I mean way over, grab the screwdriver out of the toolkit and short the cooling fan thermoswitch contacts on for five to ten minutes. You'll do this because after you lose a little more than half of your coolant, it won't be in contact with that thermoswitch anymore and the fans will shut down.
Next time just replace the pump at 120k intervals and check for play and leakage in the spring and fall. You do this by loosening the belts and wiggling the water pump belt pulley around. If you have play, you have a reason for concern. Also, stick your finger up into the area beneath that pulley, and if it comes out with leaking coolant reconstituted, you have even more reason for concern.
Water pump (even OEM): $90. It takes me an hour, but my cars have no AC so I have easy access.
Cylinder head resurfacing and head gasket job: $750 from a good indie.
Keeping yourself and your family off the side of the road: catch phrase.
