i mentioned that the shop pulled the head for the previous owner-he's the one that sold me the car, and the same one that didn't notice any of the symptoms. also, the number were from the shop that checked the head-the numbers were on the face-ie, gasket face. sorry i didn't make that more clear. one point, however, after just having done a hg job last week, on a 89 turbo that wasn't driven to distruction, the water got into the oil and number 4 chamber at the same time. i guess that the metal ring failed first (it was really rotten) pushed pressure through the rotten gasket to the water way, and on to the oil return. that corner of the gasket was just a mess, and had to be scraped off. there was oil and water in the exhaust, water in the oil, and water in the chamber, causing hydro lock. the bright 18 year old GIRL (props to her!) shut the car off as soon as she saw the smoke, and called the mechanic/previous owner-me. so water in the oil can happen without piston ring failure. as for my situation, the head is on, will get to hook everything else up later, and will let the board know. thanks all.
